Doordarshan souvenir store available on Amazon

As part of its efforts to re-establish Doordarshan as “the channel of India” and to help viewers savour the nostalgia of its famous shows and serials, the national broadcaster on Monday launched its souvenir store on an e-commerce portal Amazon India.

“Doordarshan has always been the ‘home’ for Indian television viewers. With modest beginnings in Delhi on September 15, 1959, Doordarshan continues to be the channel for and of the citizens of India,” an official release said.

It said that shows such as Hum Log, Buniyaad, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, Malgudi Days, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Chitrahaar and Rangoli, were not only impressive but also served as inspiration to the young and old generation in the 80s and early 90s.

In order to provide viewers an experience of brand Doordarshan in their hands and to relive the nostalgia, it was felt that an outlet should be provided which will make the relationship stronger with its viewers and citizens, the release said.

The DD Souvenir Gallery was launched on June 21, 2018, at the Doordarshan Bhawan in the national capital.

“To make it further approachable and accessible, Doordarshan’s souvenir store is being launched on the Amazon India,” the relase said, adding that it is the first broadcaster whose souvenirs are available online.

The current line of merchandise, including T-shirts, coffee mugs and sippers have the tagline: “I am in your DNA, I am your Doordarshan”.

Mumbai girl is world’s 1st to cross Atlantic Ocean in LSA

Captain Aarohi Pandit, a 23-year-old pilot from Mumbai became the world’s first woman to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo in a Light Sports Aircraft (LSA), thrilling her family, friends and aviation circles here on Tuesday.

She achieved the feat around midnight Monday-Tuesday (May 13-14) when she landed her tiny aircraft at Iqaluit Airport in Canada, after a gruelling 3,000 km long flight, under adverse and extreme weather conditions following take-off from Wick, Scotland (United Kingdom), with brief stopovers in Greenland and Iceland.

“This is part of her ongoing year-long global circumnavigation flight which was launched wither friend Keithair Misquitta on July 30. Aarohi continued solo from UK to Canada, and they will return to India by July 30, 2019,” said an excited Lynn de Souza, head of Social Access, a not-for-profit communications firm which organised and sponsored the expedition.

“En route, she set another world record as the first woman pilot to fly solo above the treacherous Greenland ice-cap in a LSA, and is due for at least half a dozen other records by the time she reaches India,a Lynn told IANS.

A commercial pilot and LSA licence holder, Pandit and her best friend Keithair Misquitta left India on the Women Empower (WE) Expedition in the tiny aircraft christened ‘Mahi’.

‘Mahi’ is a tiny, single-engine Sinus 912 weighing a little of 400 kg or nearly equivalent to a Bullet motorcycle, manufactured by Pipistrel of Slovenia, and is also the first LSA registered by Directorate-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) India.

Pandit and Misquitta flew over Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, then to Pakistan, where they landed — making it the first civilian LSA flight to land in the neighbouring country since 1947 — and went onto to Iran, Turkey, Serbia, Slovenia, Germany, France and UK.

After landing in Iqaluit, Pandit proudly exhibited the Indian Tricolour presented to her by the Indian Ambassador to Canada Vikas Swarup, said Lynn.

“I am so honoured and grateful I could do this for my country and for women everywhere… Flying over the Atlantic Ocean is a humbling experience. Its just you and your little plane, the light blue sky above and dark blue see or shining white ice below,” said a tired but cheerful Pandit in her landing remarks to her cheering friends in Mumbai, who stayed awake till early on Tuesday to witness her making history.

Though she admitted certain sectors in the long flight were bumpy, the “beauty of the ocean and islands was breathtaking and I would do it all over again in a heartbeat”.

Pandit is an ardent fan of the legendary American aviator, Amelia Earheart — who became the world’s first woman to make a solo transatlantic flight in a bigger aircraft, 87 years ago, on May 20, 1932.

A resident of Borivali, northwest Mumbai suburb, Pandit underwent an arduous seven-month preparatory training schedule in India, Greenland, Siberia, Italy over oceans, high altitude, snow, extreme weather conditions, different terrains testing her physical and mental capabilities to undertake her circumnavigation feat.

After a brief sojourn in Canada, the WE Expedition will continue with Pandit flying westwards to Russia, cross many a longitudes and hurdles, create or break more records, before she finally returns home by July 30, after clocking in around 37,000 km.

Will BJP make a dent in JMM bastion in Jharkhand?

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi prepares to hold a rally at Deoghar in the Santhal Pargana division of Jharkhand on Wednesday, the question being asked is whether the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) efforts pay in making a dent in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) bastion.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the JMM contested four seats in the region and won two (Dumka and Rajmahal). The BJP won the Godda seat.

With Chief Minister Raghubar Das toiling, the BJP exudes confidence about ousting the JMM from the region. Das has been holding two-three rallies a day and making direct attacks at the Soren family.

“The Soren family has exploited the people of Santhal Pargana for years. The people voted for them, but they did nothing for the development of the area. Instead, it violated the land laws and amassed land illegally,” he reiterates at his rallies.

But it may not be as easy as it sounds. JMM President Shibu Soren is a grassroots politician who started his political carrier with a campaign against moneylenders in the region. His campaign freed poor tribals from clutches of usurers and Soren became popular as ‘Disom Guru’ among them.

Godda, Dumka and Rajmahal are the state’s remaining three Lok Sabha constituencies going to the polls on May 19 in the seventh and final phase of voting. Spread over six districts, the seats fall in the tribal-majority Santhal Pargana, which is a JMM stronghold. Dumka and Rajmahal are reserved for Scheduled Tribes (ST).

The JMM chief has been winning the Dumka Lok Sabha seat since 1991. It was only in 1998 and 1999 that BJP’s Babulal Marandi defeated Soren. Marandi quit the seat in 2001 after becoming first Chief Minister of Jharkhand, carved out of Bihar in 2000.

Once a die-hard BJP member, Marandi quit the party in 2006 to float his own outfit, the Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajantantrik. The JVM-P is now part of the JMM-RJD-Congress alliance.

Soren’s son Hemant Soren is former Chief Minister and legislator from the Barhet Assembly seat. Hemant’s wife Sita Soren is also an MLA from the region.

The Rajmahal seat has been alternating between the BJP and the JMM for many years. In 2014, JMM’s Vijay Kumar Hansdak defeated BJP’s Hemalal Murmu, who won the seat on the JMM ticket in 2004. The BJP had won the seat in 2009.

Godda was traditionally a Congress seat, but the BJP won it in 1999 and 2009, and in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections pushed the Congress to the number two position. This time, the seat has gone to the JVM-P as per the grand alliance’s seat-sharing formula.

Launches hundai grand i10 price just so much

As petrol prices remain high and upgrading diesel engines to meet BS-VI norms becomes a costly affair, carmakers are choosing the next best alternative – CNG. The cheapest and most environment friendly fuel, preference for CNG is also because India has vast reserves of it. Maruti Suzuki can be described as the leader in offering factory fitted CNG cars, but now, Korean carmaker Hyundai is also catching up. After offering factory fitted CNG variant of Santro, Hyundai has now launched CNG variant of Grand i10.

CNG kit was earlier available for Grand i10, but it was offered only in prime variant. This limited the car’s use to fleet operators. Hyundai has now launched CNG for Grand i10 Magna trim, effectively making it available to the masses. CNG variants are usually costlier than their petrol counterparts and in case of Grand i10, the price hike is Rs 67,000. Hyundai Grand i10 with factory fitted CNG kit is priced at Rs 6.39 Lakh.

A drawback of CNG is that cars running on this fuel have to sacrifice their power and torque. In case of Grand i10 Magna petrol, the car is powered by a 1.2 Kappa Dual VTVT Petrol engine that generates 83 PS power at 6,000 rpm and 110 Nm torque at 4,000 rpm. The CNG variant uses the same engine, but power and torque output is reduced to 67 PS and 98 Nm. Magna’s CNG engine sends power to the front wheels and is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.

However, CNG is still preferred, as it effectively covers for its shortcomings in the long run. Operating cost of CNG cars is quite less, as compared to petrol cars and CNG engines tend to last longer and require less maintenance.

Hyundai Grand i10 Magna is just above the base trim Era, but it offers various features as standard such as rear AC vents, power windows, steering mounted controls, and electrically adjustable outside mirrors. Safety features include ABS with EBD, impact sensing auto door unlock, dual airbags, central locking, immobilizer, and day & night inside rear view mirror.

Hyundai is currently testing the next generation of Grand i10, which will replace the existing model. As revealed in spy shots, next-gen Grand i10 will be bigger and come with a host of contemporary and hi-tech features.

PM Modi to unveil development projects in Karnataka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will divulge improvement extends in Karnataka’s twin urban areas of Hubballi and Dharwad northwest locale and address a BJP tradition on Sunday, a gathering official said.

“Modi will travel to Hubballi from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu later in the day to take an interest in 2-3 open projects and address our state chiefs and units from all the state,” party official S. Shantaram told IANS.

The twin urban areas are about 400km from the state capital Bengaluru.

Modi will initially establish the framework stone of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Dharwad) and devote the city appropriation venture in Dharwad and 1.5-ton Mangaluru vital oil office (SPR) and the 2.5-ton Padur SPR office of the state-run Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd (ISPRL).

The Prime Minister will likewise devote multiplying of 18km Chikjajur-Mayakonda area railroad line for traveler and cargo administrations, and start the jolt work of 346-km Hospeta-Hubballi-Vasco da Gama line in this locale.

The charge of the expansive check will decrease travel time and outflow of ozone depleting substance with lower diesel utilization.

Before tending to the gathering tradition in Hubballi, Modi will observer the e-griha pravesh (house warming) of 2,384 houses worked under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Dharwad.

“Modi will dispatch the BJP’s battle for the resulting Lok Sabha races, due in April-May, as the gathering will challenge in all the 28 parliamentary bodies electorate in the southern state,” included the authority.

Eat, drink and make merry at pocket-friendly House Of Commons

Youngsters who are looking for an easy-on-the-pocket place to eat, drink and groove can have it all at House of Commons (HOC), a British-inspired gastropub that offers a vast menu comprising Continental, Mediterranean and Indian cuisines, coupled with rejuvenating drinks and live music — ideal for a fun evening.

Located in Connaught Place, HOC has a casual vibe with red and green furniture, and wooden tables. The walls have a brick finish all over and showcase witty frames and quirky accessories. It also has a small sitting arrangement outside.

HOC hosts musical nights on an almost regular basis. “We have a live band on Wednesdays, Rock and Retro Ladies Nights on Thursdays, during which we offer 25 per cent discount to women; Sufi live music on Fridays, Bollywood night on Saturdays and DJ night on Sundays,” Manager Krishna Kumar told IANS.

Talking about food, Chef Vinay Kumar, who has been in the business for over two decades and has been associated with HOC since its launch three years ago, recommended that I kick off my meal with Paalak Patta Chaat.

It was a delicious snack of spinach leaves coated with cornflour batter, deep fried and topped with tamarind chutney, sweet curd as well as mint sauce. It was finished with a sprinkle of bhujiya and chaat masala. If you are a chaat lover, this one will surely excite your tastebuds.

Next up was the classic Fish ‘n’ Chips, followed by British Raj Mac ‘n’ Cheese and Zaffrani malai tikka.

The Fish had a flaky crust and was juicy on the inside. Served with potato chips, tarter sauce and a salad comprising lettuce, orange and sliced olives, this starter was full of gorgeous flavours.

Mac ‘n’ cheese — baked macaroni with cheese and fresh tomatoes — was silky smooth, but a little high on salt. I nibbled at it along with HOC’s signature Pimms Cup cocktail — an interesting concoction of gin, triple sec, white wine, basil and fruits.

The Zaffrani malai tikka — presented with pappad, mint chutney and onions — was succulent. The crunch of pappad and softness of the tikka complemented each other perfectly and amplified the taste of this dish.

According to the chef, Bhatti ka kukkad — chicken legs marinated overnight with 32 home-made spices — is another hot-selling appetiser and a must-try.

Other cocktails worth mentioning are Deconstructed Sex on the Beach — a fruity drink consisting of vodka, orange ice, peach caviar and cranberry. Long Island Ice Tea is another option here if you want to get tipsy.

Non-drinkers also have a variety of mocktails and shakes to choose from.

For the main course, I went for Laal Maas, Dhania Murg, Dal Makhni and Himachali Chana Paneer ka Madra, accompanied with a plain naan.

Laal maas — the fiery red hot meat curry from Rajasthan — was the winner of the evening. The lamb, cooked in desi ghee with a variety of secret masalas on coal, was finger-licking good. The flavour of cloves added to the rich aroma. But its zesty curry is not for the faint-hearted!

The Dhania Murg was creamy, yet a regular one, as was the Dal Makhni. Vegetarians must go for Himachali Chana — a delectable chickpea curry topped with chunks of paneer.

I wrapped up my meal on a sweet note with phirni.

Where: House Of Commons, M-39 Outer Circle, Connaught Place

Timings: 2 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Price: Rs 1,400 for two (approx) with alcohol
